Senator Schumer says current economic conditions require additional aid.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said the Senate debate on a coronavirus relief bill will begin next week. He did not provide any details on the Senate’s version of the legislation but, in a speech on the Senate floor, Senator Schumer said there was the need for a “bold” and “robust” bill in light of current economic conditions.
The majority leader believes the bill would move forward even if minority members are not on board. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky still holds substantial leverage in the legislative process. And two members of the majority caucus in the Senate might prevent the stimulus package from passing as it is currently written – Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Angus King of Maine – who object to giving direct payments to families making up to $300,000 a year.
